The global power industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation, driven by urgent demands for sustainable energy solutions and grid modernization. At this pivotal moment, Hyosung Heavy Industries showcased its cutting-edge power technologies at the 2024 CIGRE Paris Session, demonstrating how innovation can address today's most pressing energy challenges.

Current and Future Power Technologies in One Place

Founded in Paris in 1921, CIGRE (International Council on Large Electric Systems) is a prestigious international organization in the power sector that discusses the present and future of power technologies. Held biennially, the CIGRE General Session is an event where leading companies in the power and energy industries demonstrate their capabilities, share the latest knowledge, and discuss trends. With participation from 101 member countries, 1,250 organizations, and over 15,000 experts, Hyosung Heavy Industries reaffirmed its important position in the global power industry by showcasing its cutting-edge power technologies.

At the 2024 CIGRE exhibition, Hyosung Heavy Industries presented a variety of solutions via digital touchscreen kiosks, focusing on four key themes in the power grid sector: Offshore Wind Farms, Solar Power Plants, High Voltage DC Systems, and High Voltage AC Systems. Through this showcase, the company introduced products such as transformers (TR), gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), STATCOM, and Energy Storage Systems (ESS), emphasizing sustainable energy solutions.

Hyosung Heavy Industries' Innovative Technologies Capture Global Attention

The European Union (EU) is actively pursuing its carbon neutrality goals, with the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA) aiming for a 40% self-production rate of products necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. By 2040, the EU targets achieving over 15% market share in key low-carbon technologies. In alignment with this global shift towards prioritizing environmental sustainability, Hyosung Heavy Industries showcased its power solutions focused on carbon reduction, bringing attention to its core technologies in this field.

Hyosung Heavy Industries’ Core Technologies: GIS, ESS, and HVDC

These three core technologies—GIS, ESS, and HVDC—are set to become landmark solutions for the future power market. GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) typically functions as a massive fault switch in power plants and substations and traditionally uses SF6 gas, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Hyosung Heavy Industries' innovative GIS technology achieves over 99% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through its alternative gas solutions and minimized leakage design, setting a new standard for sustainable power infrastructure. This solution meets global environmental regulations while maintaining economic feasibility, making it highly appealing to countries and companies targeting carbon neutrality.

The ESS (Energy Storage Systems) technology also garnered attention at the exhibition as a critical element in enhancing the efficiency of renewable energy generation. ESS addresses the intermittency of renewable energy, stabilizes power grids, and effectively manages peak demand, making it essential in the era of energy transition. Hyosung Heavy Industries' ESS boasts large storage capacities and has accumulated a total of 2.6GWh in orders from 2009 to 2022. In April 2024, the company was recognized as a top-tier global ESS supplier by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), reinforcing its global market capabilities. Additionally, Hyosung Heavy Industries provides a complete Turn-Key Solution to customers, covering the entire ESS system, including PCS, batteries, and EMS, differentiating itself as a ‘reliable provider of core technologies.’

The HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) technology is crucial for minimizing power loss in long-distance transmission and ensuring stable electricity supply. It is known for their superior energy efficiency compared to traditional AC transmission methods. Even over long distances, HVDC transmission reduces power losses, making it a more efficient way to transfer electricity. Additionally, HVDC systems are advantageous for stabilizing power grids, which is crucial for integrating renewable energy sources.

In July 2024, Hyosung Heavy Industries reached a significant milestone by developing Korea's first 200MW Voltage Source HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) system, greatly improving the efficiency of power grids. The 200MW capacity is enough to power 480,000 households for a month, enabling large-scale electricity supply. This technology has garnered significant attention in the global market and is expected to play a pivotal role in the future of modern power grids.

Hyosung Heavy Industries also demonstrated its leadership in driving the power industry's agenda on the global stage. At the 2024 CIGRE Paris Exhibition, the company hosted the "Future Grid Insight Forum", a technology forum for major global clients to discuss key issues facing the power industry. Over 100 attendees participated in lively discussions on topics like the rise of AI-driven data centers, digital substations, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and eco-friendly technologies. Hyosung Heavy Industries also showcased its pioneering low-carbon power equipment (SF6-Free GIS) technology from its European R&D center. These technological achievements received positive feedback from global customers, further strengthening Hyosung Heavy Industries’ leadership.

Hyosung Heavy Industries has achieved significant milestones in its global expansion efforts, securing major contracts with key international clients. The company has signed a long-term supply agreement for ultra-high-voltage transformers worth KRW 330 billion with Norway's state-owned power company. Additionally, it reached a contract for circuit breakers worth KRW 22 billion with Iceland's state-owned power company, marking the largest single supply deal for GIS in Europe.

For the past 60 years, Hyosung Heavy Industries has been a key provider of core technologies in the global power infrastructure and transmission markets, contributing to the direction of the future power industry. By offering integrated solution packages—from design to manufacturing to services—the company differentiates itself from competitors and solidifies its position as a trusted partner and "solution provider" in the global market. Through this exhibition, Hyosung Heavy Industries demonstrated its commitment to leading the global transition to sustainable energy infrastructure. The company's comprehensive solutions and technological innovations are setting new industry standards, positioning Hyosung Heavy Industries as a key architect of the future power industry.
