Hyosung Heavy Industries Reduces Carbon Emissions at Changwon Plant Using Solar PPA

    Hyosung Heavy Industries has strengthened the low-carbon production infrastructure of its Changwon Plant.

    Hyosung Heavy Industries’ Changwon Plant decided to procure 1.6 MW of solar power from an external power producer through a PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) starting May. The Changwon Plant has been operating a 5.3 MW solar self-generation facility. With this PPA, renewable energy use by the Changwon Plant will increase by approximately 30% compared with its existing self-generation facility.

    PPA is a system wherein a company signs a contract with a power producer to purchase and use renewable energy. The Changwon Plant will procure solar power from the Taean Solar Farm through renewable energy company Encored. An advantage of this method is that it enables a company to secure eco-friendly power on a stable, long-term basis without directly installing separate power generation facilities.

    Hyosung Heavy Industries expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 966 tons per year through this agreement. This is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed annually by approximately 146,000 pine trees.

    With global customers increasingly assessing the carbon emission of products and their renewable energy consumption, efforts to reduce carbon emissions at manufacturing plants are emerging as an important competitive advantage. Hyosung Heavy Industries plans to use both solar power generation and PPA to strengthen the Changwon Plant’s low-carbon operations and respond to changes in the global market.
