Hyosung Heavy Industries to Supply Ultra-High-Voltage Transformers for Brazilian Hydropower Project

Hyosung Heavy Industries is participating in a hydropower project in Brazil.

The company announced on the 28th (local time) that it has secured an order to supply six 500kV ultra-high-voltage transformers from ANDRITZ Hydropower Brasil[1], a company specializing in hydropower and power generation equipment. The supplied ultra-high-voltage transformers will be installed at a hydropower plant located in the state of Paraná, Brazil.

Brazil ranks second globally in installed hydropower capacity, generating more than 60% of its total electricity from hydropower. To meet the increasing power demand driven by industrial development, the Brazilian government is currently executing large-scale power capacity expansion initiatives.

ANDRITZ Hydropower is a leading local hydropower equipment and EPC company responsible for over 25% of Brazil's hydropower capacity. It has operated as a primary partner for major power generation companies in Brazil over the past 30 years.

Furthermore, Hyosung Heavy Industries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development of a 'Hybrid STATCOM,' integrating Hyosung's STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) with ANDRITZ Hydropower's synchronous condenser.

STATCOMs and synchronous condensers are critical equipment utilized to maintain stable voltage and frequency within power grids. They are particularly effective in managing renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, which are subject to rapid output fluctuations based on weather conditions. The STATCOM, a power electronics-based control device, responds rapidly to voltage fluctuations, while the synchronous condenser provides inertia and stability to the power grid through rotating machinery. Although the operating mechanisms of the two systems differ, they function in a mutually complementary manner.

Based on their respective technological capabilities and market experience, Hyosung Heavy Industries and ANDRITZ Hydropower plan to maintain a long-term partnership to secure a strong position in the Latin American power stabilization market. (End)
