Hyosung Heavy Industries Showcases Domestically Developed HVDC Core Technology at Korea Energy Show 2026

Hyosung Heavy Industries, which has been selected as a participating company in the valve and controller segment of Korea Electric Power Corporation’s (KEPCO) “Large-Capacity Voltage Source Converter (VSC) HVDC Localization and Demonstration Project,” unveiled its homegrown core HVDC technologies at the 2026 Korea Energy Show.

Valves and controllers are the key equipment that determine the performance and stable operation of VSC-based HVDC systems. The converter valve, which Hyosung Heavy Industries developed using its own technology, uses power semiconductors to convert power between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). The controller regulates the magnitude and direction of power flow and protects the grid in the event of a system fault. Securing technology for these core components, the valves and controllers, is regarded as essential to operating large-capacity HVDC systems reliably.

Hyosung Heavy Industries is participating in the 2026 Korea Energy Show, held at BEXCO in Busan from the 16th to the 18th, where it is displaying a wide range of locally developed core HVDC equipment, including the valve and controller selected for the HVDC localization demonstration project.

The company is also introducing a variety of next-generation solutions that address changing power demand and energy conditions. These include ARMOUR+, an AI-based asset management platform for power equipment; the LPIT (Low Power Instrument Transformer) for building digital substations; the STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) for stabilizing grid voltage and improving power quality; the SST (Solid State Transformer), a next-generation power solution based on power semiconductors; and a hydrogen engine generator that uses hydrogen as fuel.

    □ Hyosung Heavy Industries Named Final Participant in Large-Capacity VSC HVDC Localization Demonstration Project

On the 10th, Hyosung Heavy Industries was named the final participating company in the valve and controller segment of the “Large-Capacity VSC HVDC Localization and Demonstration Project” led by KEPCO.

The market for core equipment in large-capacity VSC HVDC is currently dominated by a small number of global companies. This has heightened the need to localize core technologies in order to build out the power grid on schedule and secure a stable supply chain. In response, the government and KEPCO have been pushing to localize key HVDC equipment, including valves, controllers, and converter transformers.

Hyosung Heavy Industries began with the 20 MW-class VSC HVDC demonstration project on Jeju Island in 2012 and has continued to develop and demonstrate the technology since then. It has independently developed major 200 MW-class equipment, including converter valves and control systems, and has applied it to the actual power grid, steadily advancing both the localization and the demonstration of core technologies.

Its selection as the final participant in KEPCO’s demonstration project for the valve and controller segment reflects recognition of these localization achievements.

A Hyosung Heavy Industries official said, “This Energy Show is an opportunity to showcase the technological capabilities of Hyosung Heavy Industries, which has been driving HVDC localization and technological advancement.” The official added, “We will strengthen our competitiveness in core power technologies to support the build-out of large-capacity domestic power grids such as the West Coast Energy Highway, and we will go beyond technological self-reliance to expand our competitiveness in the global HVDC market and reinforce our export base.”
