On the 26th, Hyosung Heavy Industries announced that it has completed the installation and test operation of the 336MW ESS (energy storage system), the largest domestic capacity, at Korea Electric Power Corporation’s Bubuk substation in Miryang, Gyeongnam Province.

The 336MW ESS installed this time is equivalent to the amount of electricity that can be used by nearly 1 million four-person households for a whole month.

ESS is a power system stabilization system that charges energy at night when electricity demand is low and discharges it during peak hours in the week to improve power plant utilization, and is essential to complement the shortcomings of renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, prone to fluctuations in power generation due to the weather.

Since embarking on its ESS business in 2009, Hyosung Heavy Industries has been recognized in the domestic and international ESS markets for its prowess in power infrastructure projects and its proprietary technology that it has accumulated over a long time. In particular, the PCS (power conversion device) serving as a core component of ESS facilities by converting electricity into a form that can be stored in a battery or supplied to the power grid and the PMS (power control system), an ESS operation program, have been developed with proprietary technology. They are currently in over 200 locations nationwide, accounting for a cumulative capacity of 2.2 GWh, which is an industry-leading 22% domestic market share.

CEO Tae-hee Woo of Hyosung Heavy Industries said, “Hyosung Heavy Industries, which has been leading the domestic ESS market, has once again demonstrated its unrivaled technological prowess through this large-scale ESS project,” and “We will strengthen our position as a global industry leader beyond Korea in the ESS market where rapid growth in demand is driven by renewable energy expansion.”

Meanwhile, in recognition for its technological prowess in overseas markets, Hyosung Heavy Industries, which supplies ESS not only domestically but also in the UK and South Africa, has been listed as the best ESS company by BNEF (Bloomberg New Energy Finance), a renowned renewable energy market and trend research firm, for the first and second quarters of this year.
