Hyosung Heavy Industries Showcases Future of Power Grids for AI Data Centers in US

2026.04.30

Hyosung Heavy Industries is set to introduce its "total solution" for the power grids of AI data centers at the largest power transmission and distribution exhibition in the US.

Hyosung Heavy Industries announced on April 30 that it would be participating in "IEEE PES T&D 2026" to be held in Chicago, US from May 4 to 7 (local time).

At this exhibition themed "Powering Reliability, Engineering Resilience," Hyosung Heavy Industries showcases optimal solutions linking the present and future of power grids.

Major exhibits include: the world’s largest 800 kV 7000 A GCB (Gas-insulated circuit breaker); SST (solid-state transformer), a key power solution for next-generation data centers; voltage source converter-based HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current) transmission system successfully developed with proprietary technology for the first time in Korea; and STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator), which enhances power stability for data centers and new & renewable energy applications.

The 800 kV 7000 A GCB on display at the exhibition is a US export model developed in March of this year. The company succeeded in reliably handling the massive current of 7000 A while maintaining the size of the existing 5000 A capacity model through design optimization. 800 kV GCB is a key power equipment for 765 kV transmission networks—which are currently seeing significant investments in the US—and demand for large-capacity equipment has been growing recently.

A submodule of the world’s first 22.9 kV SST (solid-state transformer) developed by Hyosung Heavy Industries will be on display as well. SST is a product that significantly improves data center power efficiency and is regarded as a "game changer" for future data center power solutions. Hyosung Heavy Industries is currently conducting R&D on more advanced SSTs that can handle higher voltage and is planning to showcase commercial models consecutively in the future.

In the US market, data centers’ demand for power is expected to increase rapidly by 25% over the next decade, driven by the explosive growth of the AI industry. Hyosung Heavy Industries plans to reinforce its reputation as a "total solution provider" among local customers by maximizing the competitiveness of its existing power equipment such as ultra-high-voltage transformers and circuit breakers, while showcasing next-generation technologies including SST and HVDC in response to changes in the local market.

“Through this exhibition, we will prove to power industry professionals that Hyosung Heavy Industries is a reliable partner in building AI power grids. By combining the power infrastructure technology that we have accumulated over the years with next-generation solutions, we will lead the paradigm shift in the US market,” an official from Hyosung Heavy Industries said.

"IEEE PES T&D" is a global exhibition and conference hosted every 2 years by IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). At this exhibition, more than 800 companies from around the world participate and share the latest trends and solutions in the power industry.
