Hyosung heavy Industries extends circuit breaker plant in India

Hyosung Heavy Industries is actively pursuing the expansion of its ultra-high voltage circuit breaker production facilities, following its transformer production, to navigate the rapidly growing global demand for power infrastructure.

    □ Investing KRW 100 billion, including a new dedicated circuit breaker plant for export in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province

On the 23rd, Hyosung Heavy Industries announced that it will invest a total of KRW 100 billion to build a new dedicated ultra-high voltage circuit breaker production plant for export-use in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, and expand related production facilities. This ultra-high voltage circuit breaker factory for export-use is scheduled for completion in the first half of 2026.

Once completed, ultra-high voltage circuit breaker production capacity will mean a roughly 1.5-fold increase compared to the existing facility.

The new plant will produce ultra-high voltage circuit breakers, including 420kV, 550kV, and 800kV, which will be exported for sale to global markets, including the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East.

Hyosung Heavy Industries is also investing in the expansion of testing facilities, including withstanding voltage testers. Along with the ultra-high voltage circuit breaker production line, the company plans to further enhance production capacity by expanding its insulator (electrical insulation material) manufacturing facility, a core component of circuit breakers.

This expansion is a strategic measure to navigate the rapidly surging global demand for ultra-high voltage circuit breakers, propelled by surging power demand from data centers and the AI industry, and the replacement of aging power infrastructure in advanced countries. According to Fortune Business Insights, a global market research firm, the global circuit breaker market, which was valued at USD 22.47 billion in 2024, is projected to grow at a CAGR of 8.3%, reaching USD 42.85 billion by 2032.

    □ Expansion of circuit breaker plant in Pune, India… Navigating the surge in local demand

Hyosung Heavy Industries, which holds a dominant market share in the ultra-high voltage circuit breaker market in the Indian electricity market, is also expanding its circuit breaker plant in Pune. This is attributed to the power supply failing to keep pace with the recent surge in power demand driven by economic growth in India.

India, the world's third-largest power producer, is increasing its share of non-fossil fuel-based power generation by 2030. As a result, transmission and distribution network expansion and electrical grid modernization have been in full swing. In particular, demand for ultra-high voltage circuit breakers is rapidly increasing across both private and public projects.

Moreover, the company plans to actively engage in power infrastructure expansion projects in India. Apart from existing ultra-high voltage circuit breakers, the company aims to diversify its production of core products such as STATCOM, HVDC, C-GIS (compact gas-insulated switchgear), and ESS, strengthening its ability to provide customized total solutions to customer

Chairman Cho Hyun-joon of Hyosung affirmed, "Securing production capacity to smoothly handle orders is essential to adeptly navigate the growing demand for global power infrastructure. Looking ahead, we will achieve tangible results with packaged total solutions, including ultra-high voltage circuit breakers."
