Hyosung Heavy Industries to Supply 765kV Transmission Grid as a Full Package to the U.S.

2025.09.19

Hyosung Heavy Industries is cementing its position in the U.S. 765kV ultra-high voltage transmission market by supplying a full package of power equipment, including 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers and 800kV circuit breakers.

Hyosung Heavy Industries recently signed a large-scale power equipment supply contract with the largest U.S.-based transmission grid operator, including 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers, reactors, and circuit breakers. This marks the first instance a Korean company has supplied a complete power solution package, including transformers and circuit breakers, for a 765kV transmission network.

    □ Received over KRW 200 billion in orders in August-September alone… Participation in transmission network projects

Hyosung Heavy Industries received orders totaling over KRW 200 billion from the largest U.S.-based transmission network operator from August to September alone for ultra-high voltage power equipment, including 29 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers and reactors and 24 800kV ultra-high voltage circuit breakers. These equipment will be used in the new 765kV transmission network construction project being implemented in the southern and eastern U.S.

Power demand in the U.S. is expected to grow rapidly by 25% over the next decade, largely from the growth of data centers fueled by the AI industry and the proliferation of electric vehicles. As a result, 765kV transmission lines have recently gained traction as an effective solution for transmission grid expansion. Compared to existing 365kV or 500kV lines, they significantly reduce transmission losses and enable the uninterrupted transmission of large amounts of power over long distances.

Only facility in the U.S. capable of designing and producing 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers

Hyosung Heavy Industries' Memphis plant is currently the only facility in the U.S. capable of designing and producing 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers. 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers are highly complex power equipment, to the extent that only 10 companies worldwide can produce them, and require high-voltage insulation technology and rigorous testing and verification processes. Hyosung Heavy Industries has adopted the same quality control expertise and technology as its Changwon plant in Korea, which boasts the world’s largest 765kV transformer production capacity, to its Memphis plant in the U.S., thereby enhancing its local production capacity.

Hyosung Heavy Industries has supplied nearly half of the 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers currently installed in the U.S. transmission grid, proving its product reliability and technological prowess in the U.S. power market, with the top-ranked market share for 765kV ultra-high voltage transformers since the early 2010s. In particular, it is the only Korean company capable of providing the U.S. market with an all-inclusive solution for key power equipment within the transmission network, including ultra-high voltage transformers, reactors, and circuit breakers required for 765kV transmission.

Woo Tae-hee, CEO, "We will cement our unrivaled position by introducing total solutions."

CEO Woo Tae-hee of Hyosung Heavy Industries stated, "Hyosung Heavy Industries' competitive advantage lies in its ability to deliver total solutions encompassing not only ultra-high-voltage transformers but also various power equipment, including circuit breakers and STATCOMs," and added, "We will cement our unrivaled position in the U.S. 765kV transmission grid business, which is poised for explosive growth in the future."

Meanwhile, under Hyosung Chairman Cho Hyun-joon, investments of over USD 150 million (roughly KRW 207.1 billion) have been made in the advancement of the Memphis plant so far. Testing and production facilities are also being expanded by 2026, doubling the Memphis plant's production capacity once completed. Chairman Cho has consistently underscored, "Securing differentiated competitiveness is essential for Hyosung Heavy Industries to emerge as a key player in the AI industry by proactively responding to global customer demands and market changes."
