Hyosung Heavy Industries Announces Roadmap for Developing Low-Carbon High-Voltage Switchgear
Hyosung Heavy Industries today announced its roadmap to develop SF₆-Free high-voltage switchgear (GIS, Gas Insulated Switchgear) using the “C4-FN” gas mixture, accelerating the transition of its global portfolio toward sustainability.
The newly expanded application of the C4-FN gas mixture enables Hyosung to maintain the same performance level as SF₆ while reducing climate impact by approximately 98%. For more than 50 years, SF₆ has been used as a key insulating gas in high-voltage switchgear. However, it has a global warming potential (GWP) 23,900 times greater than CO₂, making it one of the most potent greenhouse gases.
In November last year, Hyosung successfully achieved domestic commercialization of SF₆-Free high-voltage switchgear using the C4-FN gas mixture. Building on this expertise, the company plans to begin developing export-oriented products in 2026 and to gradually expand the application of this technology across its entire GIS portfolio—from small to large-scale switchgear—by 2030.
According to market research firm Business Research Insights, the global SF₆-Free switchgear market is projected to grow from approximately USD 5.4 billion in 2024 to more than USD 7.4 billion by 2033.
Chairman Hyun-joon Cho has consistently stressed that companies failing to contribute to the future of humanity through eco-friendly technologies, products, and production processes will find it difficult to survive. He has emphasized the importance of developing products that enhance customer value based on technological excellence. The announcement of the low-carbon switchgear development roadmap is seen as an extension of this management philosophy.
