Hyosung selected Artist LEE Jinsoul as Hyosung-chosen Artist of the Year 2023 in a ceremony held at the Seoul Theater Center on January 11.
The selection is annually done by Hyosung and Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, Seoul Arts Creation Center for the Disabled among disabled visual artists in consideration of the works done each year, with the awardee presented with 5 million won. It was started in 2020 in a bid to disseminate the value of disabled art and encourage creative works by disabled artists.
Artist LEE Jinsoul, the prize winner, has engaged in creative works of visualizing sounds in her unique way. The selection committee composed of professionals in culture/arts said that their selection was made based on the fact that the prize winner’s installation works bring up significant critical topics from a perspective of contemporary arts as those mobilizing diverse senses and having different senses interchange with each other. They also added that the artist sees disability as a possibility for other creations rather than an obstacle.
“We’ll continue to adopt many more programs designed to build a society where the disabled can happily blend in with the non-disabled,” a Hyosung official said.
Ms. LEE Jinsoul started her career as one of those belonging to the 8th and 9th groups of the Seoul Arts Creation Center for the Disabled (formerly known as the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture’s Jamil Creator Studio). Hyosung has provided support for the center since 2018 in a bid to encourage disabled artists’ creative activities.
