Hyosung is sponsoring Yo-Yo Ma’s cello recital to be held at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on Nov. 2 as the 7th of “the Hyosung Culture Series.”
Said series is a project designed to provide support for those in the culture, arts, and sports sectors and the underprivileged through cooperation between the world-renowned cellist and his long-time acquaintance Hyosung Vice Chair CHO Hyun-sang, who heads the Hyosung Social Work Volunteers and engages in activities of providing support for the less privileged. Back in 2009, Yo-Yo Ma readily accepted Mr. CHO Hyun-sang’s suggestion of a “teaching class” to encourage young people in a difficult situation to continue building their dream as musicians or artists.
Since 2010, Hyosung has been providing support for Busan House Orchestra and Onnuri Sarang Chamber Orchestra composed of young people suffering from development disorders, etc., providing them with scholarships or helping them purchase musical instruments, hold concerts, or run music camps, etc. Hyosung also invited students of the Central Christian Academy and their families to one of Yo-Yo Ma’s concerts. In 2019, the Company provided support for the cellist’s Bach Project for playing unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach in 36 cities in 6 continents including the DMZ Peace Concert held at Dorasan Station in the DMZ, Paju in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
As one of the biggest musicians of the current era, Yo-Yo Ma has made more than 120 music CDs and won 19 Grammy Awards. At the event held on November 2, he is expected to move the audience deeply by playing pieces by Gabriel Faure, Dmitri Shostakovich, Arvo Part, etc., together with his long-time music partner Kathryn Stott.
