Hyosung, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), and Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA) to Pour Efforts into the Protection of the Sea

2023.05.10

Hyosung has decided to carry out activities for the preservation of the ocean ecosystem in cooperation with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA) on ″Sea Arbor Day″ (May 10).

-□ MOU signed for the ″Blue Carbon Project″ for the preservation of the ocean ecosystem on Sea Arbor Day

At the special event held on May 10 at the Jeju International Convention Center to commemorate the 11th Sea Arbor Day, those from Hyosung affiliates (i.e., Hyosung Corporation, Hyosung TNC, Hyosung Heavy Industries, Hyosung Advanced Materials, and Hyosung Chemical) signed an MOU for the promotion of the Blue Carbon Project as part of the effort for the preservation of the ocean ecosystem with MOF and FIRA.

Those attending the MOU ceremony included Minister of Oceans and Fisheries CHO Seunghwan, President LEE Chun Woo of FIRA, Jeju-do Governor Oh Younghun, Hyosung TNC President KIM Chi-hyung, etc.

Sea Arbor Day was designated in connection with the need to build sea forests to preserve coastal ecosystems, which are gradually being laid waste due to climate change and contamination of the ocean environment. In 2012, South Korea became the first country in the world to designate Sea Arbor Day and this year marks its 11th anniversary.

    □ Participants promised to improve the ocean ecosystem environment for carbon neutrality and put ESG management into practice

The parties to the MOU (i.e., Hyosung, MOF, and FIRA) agreed to work closely together for the following with focus on carbon neutrality and preservation of biodiversity: △ to improve the ocean ecosystem environment for carbon neutrality and put ESG management into practice; △ to strive to promote the blue carbon project for seagrass groves; △ to build social consensus on the importance of ocean ecosystem and enhance the level of people′s awareness of Sea Arbor Day.

″We at Hyosung are taking a positive step to cope with climate change and carbon neutrality, regarding it as a responsibility of global citizens. We will fulfill our role as a global business to preserve the ocean ecosystem and build a sustainable future,″ Chairman CHO Hyun-joon said, commenting on the matter.

    □ Five businesses including Hyosung carried out an activity for growing seagrass groves in Tongyeong, Gyeongnam.

Earlier on May 4, Hyosung employees (those from Hyosung Corporation, Hyosung TNC, Hyosung Heavy Industries, Hyosung Advanced Materials, and Hyosung Chemical) carried out activities for the transplantation of a thousand seagrasses and cleaning of the coastal areas in Yongnam-myeon, Tongyeong, Gyeongnam.

Seagrasses are leading blue carbon species and are designated as those to be protected under the Conservation and Management of Marine Ecosystems. As the only blossoming ones among ascidians, they play an important role as spawning ground, habitat, and hiding place for a variety of marine life including fish.

Hyosung Corporation, Hyosung TNC, and Hyosung Heavy Industries started taking positive steps for the preservation of the ocean ecosystem last December including investing in the Rural Area Fund for Win-Win Cooperation and working with FIRA and Geoje-si for the preservation of seagrass groves.
