The final presentation and award ceremony of “The second Hyosung Paper Contest for Korean & Chinese undergraduate and graduate students” were held at Hyosung’s Mapo Headquarters in Seoul on December 9. The competition, organized by the The Power & Industrial Systems PG, was intended to promote the public image of Hyosung as a leading company within the fields of electricity, electronics and machinery, as well as providing an opportunity for the activation of R&D in related areas.
Students attending undergraduate and graduate schools in Korea and China submitted their entries in one of the three fields of R&D, New Business and Marketing. This competition continued for 6 months, starting with the initial submission of applications and paper abstracts in June, 2011, with a total of 65 students competing with each other.
All parts of the competition, including the preparation of papers and presentations, were conducted in English in order to reflect Power & Industrial Systems PG’s global presence. In addition, current team leaders from the Power & Industrial Systems PG’s R&D department, Headquarters and Changwon Plant, as well as advisory professors, also participated to ensure a fair screening and evaluation of applications.
A total of 12 teams (1 Grand Prize, 4 Runner-up prizes and 7 Participation awards) won awards. Biao Zhao (Electrical Engineering Dept. of Tsinghua University, China) who wrote a paper entitled ‘Switched Z-Source Isolated Bi-directional DC-DC Converter and its Phase-Shifting Shoot-Through Bivariate Coordinated Control Strategy’ won the grand prize along with prize money of 10,000 dollars. An official from the Power & Industrial Systems PG said this paper contest, in which Korean and Chinese undergraduate and graduate students took part, served as an opportunity to for a growth engine for technology development.
