Hyosung successfully developed mid-function carbon fibers for the first time in Korea on June 14th after 3 years of independent research. Hysoung will be investing 250 billion won to complete a 2,000-ton carbon fiber plant at the Jeonju Eco High-Tech Complex by 2013 to commercialize the new product. The company also decided to invest 1.2 trillion won in the new field until 2020, and singed an MOU with the North Jeolla Province and Jeonju City governments. The mid-function product developed by Hyosung is carbon fiber most widely used in all industries. Carbon fibers are extremely advanced materials requiring high-technologies for production – and because only a few companies in Japan and the US could produce it, Korea had previously relied on imports for all carbon fiber materials. Vice Chairman Lee Sang-Woon said, “Because Hyosung could successfully developed carbon fibers, Korea has found a substitute for the imports, and has found a way to take its technology to another level,” and added, “From now on, we will focus our energies on developing carbon fiber of the highest quality and price competitiveness, to create world-class material by 2020 and join the ranks of the top companies in the field.”
