Hyosung plans to build a factory for LCD TAC film on a 12,000-acre site in Yongyeon, Ulsan, investing 130 billion won by 2009 as part of the plan to push ahead with the electronic materials business, which is expected to be a next-generation growth engine.
TAC film is a film that works to protect Polarized Light Film, which is a part of the LCDs used in TVs, monitors, laptop computers and cellular phones. It is an electronic material for display having excellent outstanding optical characteristics.
It is expected that full-fledged production of TAC film will bring great import substitution effect and contribute to enhancement of competitiveness of domestic finished or intermediary display products. In June 2006, the Company took over AGFA Photo of Germany in connection with the plan for construction of a TAC film factory. In June 2007, the Company was selected by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy as a leading business in the Government-supported project for production of parts on domestic technology.
As of 2006, the world’s TAC film markets were 1,300 billion won in total, out of which the Korean market accounts for about 300 billion won. Market watchers say that, upon completion of the TAC film factory in Ulsan in 2009, the domestic market will increase to 520 billion won.
