Hyosung Advanced Materials to lead biodiversity preservation May.19, 2022

Hyosung Advanced Materials signed on May 18 an MOU with the National Institute of Ecology for biodiversity preservation and spread of ecological culture.

Under said MOU, the two sides will work together to explore and promote biodiversity preservation and natural protection activities.

The two have agreed to push through with the project for the preservation of Dysophylla yatabeana as the first project to be carried out together under the MOU by planting the species, which is designated as endangered wildlife Grade 2 by the Ministry of Environment, in Jeonju.

Said species was first discovered in the country in 1912 but gradually disappeared due to environment destruction. Some were recently found on Jeju Island, and efforts are being made for their restoration through replanting in Jeonju. Hyosung Advanced Materials has decided to provide strong support for the effort as one operating a carbon fiber factory in Jeonju.

″We will do what we can for biodiversity preservation to build a heathy ecosystem for the future generation. We find it particularly significant to cooperate with the National Institute of Ecology on the matter,″ said CEO Lee Kun-jong of Hyosung Advanced Materials.

On May 19, employees of the Company engaged in activities for the purification of beaches at Yongyu Beach, Yeongjong-do, Incheon on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity. It was the first of the series of activities to be carried out this year. The activity was started by ordinary people in Texas, US in 1986. In Korea, the activity is sponsored by the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM), which is under the umbrella of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).

Hyosung Advanced Materials plans to carry out biodiversity preservation-related activities starting this year, seeing the deepening of the relevant crisis amid the climate change. The Company will carry out the relevant employee education and campaign while having its business units engage in activities like plogging, cleaning beaches, taking care of endangered wildlife species, or getting rid of ecosystem-disturbing species.
