Hyosung's 'Smile Expedition' Provides Medical Care in Vietnam in the 8th Year Nov.26, 2018

Hyosungs Smile Expedition Provides Medical Care in Vietnam in the 8th Year

Smile Expedition, teamed up with Hyosung, international relief organization Food for the Hungry, and medical professionals from Gangnam Severance Hospital and Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine, provided free medical services to around 1,800 residents in the Long Tho region near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from November 19 to 22.

This year marks the eighth year of dispatching Smile Expedition, which has served a total of 12,000 local residents who have difficulties receiving health care due to insufficient medical facilities and financial burdens.

This year, a total of 33 medical professionals took part in the trip, including 27 doctors and staff from the cardiovascular surgery, ophthalmology, family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, and dentists of Gangnam Severance Hospital as well as six practitioners from Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine. Around 100 employees of the Hyosung Vietnam Division assisted such as interpretation and arrangement for the event.

“Vietnam is the largest production base of Hyosung, which serves as an outpost for global Hyosung. We will do our best to fulfill our social responsibilities as a member of the regional community and a global enterprise,” said Chairman Cho Hyun-joon.

Smile Expedition has expanded its medical services every year so that more residents can receive various medical benefits. In 2014, high-risk patients, such as one with fracture complications and another with a skull dent, were invited to Korea and provided with free surgeries. In 2016, an ophthalmology program was newly added, which sent free glasses to 44 elementary school students with low vision. For the first time this year, the team included echocardiography examination for patients with heart disease concerns.

In addition, more than 600 elementary school students in the nearby area were given basic health and ophthalmology checkups, as well as education to prevent dental diseases. Dong-A Pencil Co., Ltd. also contributed to providing school supplies. Pregnancy and childbirth education, which has been offered to pregnant women at Hyosung's workplaces in Vietnam, was expanded to university students near Long Tho, who are poised to start their career.

Meanwhile, Hyosung has sponsored children in the underprivileged areas of Vietnam by helping improve communal and education facilities through the salary-sharing campaign by employees at the headquarters. The local corporation has also led efforts to contribute to the global community by providing a mini library and computers.
